Gouache abstract Painting

This gouache painting was done with

  • magenta (Rico Design Gouache)
  • white (Lucas studio Gouache)
  • midnight blue (Colorex liquid watercolor)
  • violet (Lucas studio Gouache)
I had bought the Magenta Rico Design Gouache a few days ago and now wanted to try it out. I must say that I am a bit disappointed with the consistency of it. I had to apply more than one layer in order to get it opaque. However, I will continue using them - maybe adding a tiny bit of white to render them more opaque.
On the other hand I was quiet pleased with the Violet Lucas Studio Gouache (I had bought it at a time when it was still called Nerchau Gouache and belonged to the low price gouache brands). I could apply it very nicely on the watercolor paper,

One short additional note: I think I managed for the first time not to consider the painting finished too early. I had the image lying on my table for one day, then I took a look at it and added the finishing touches. This is something I want to keep up doing with the next paintings.

Gouache and Colored pencils

As you can see I am still down the "Gouache" rabbit hole. This time I used "Golden Yellow" from Lascaux. The smallest size it comes in is 85 ml, and it is not cheap. However: I bought this bottle almost 10 years ago, and it still works fine. It is very creamy, and: it can be rewetted without losing quality. I also used "Indigo" from Schmincke (Akademie Gouache), and I noticed that there is a significant difference when you try to rewet it. So I think I will rather buy Lascaux Gouache when I need to restock my Gouache paints.

Another thing I learnt is that you can successfully apply colored pencils on gouache. Here I used a deep blue,

Cute Houses

Here I used an old line drawing which I had done with Inkscape a really long time ago. I coloured that drawing many times - with acrylic inks, with markers - and now with gouache paints. I painted on mixed media paper which tends a bit to buckle when you add too much water. So I taped it down with a normal painter's tape, and when the paper was dry I didn't peel the tape off but simply cut the tape off together with the paper.
I used the following brands: Lucas Studio Tempera/Gouache, Reeves Gouache and Schmincke Akademie Gouache. The interesting thing is that I am quite surprised how manageable the Lucas Studio Gouache is, whereas I had two disappointing experiences with the Ultramarine paint from Reeves and the Schmincke Akademie Indigo paint. When I opened them a big blub of water came out, with some coloured binder. Obviously the binder had separated in the tube. I kind of expected something like that from Reeves, but not from Schmincke. However the second Gouache paint from Schmincke Akademie, the Violet blue, worked fine.
